Tipping Guide

How much should you tip?

Tipping in the United States is not optional — it is an embedded part of the compensation model for millions of service workers. Restaurant servers, bartenders, hairdressers, taxi drivers and delivery couriers all rely on tips to make up a significant portion of their take-home pay, often because their hourly base wage is kept artificially low by federal tipped-minimum-wage rules.

The current benchmark for good restaurant service is 18–20%. Fifteen percent was the standard a generation ago, but inflation, rising living costs and a broader awareness of wage structures have shifted expectations upward. If you received attentive, friendly, accurate service — 20% is the right number. If the server went above and beyond, 25% is a meaningful gesture.

For quick-service and counter-service establishments where a tip jar or tablet prompt appears, there is no obligation — but if the staff prepared something customised for you or were particularly warm, a 10–15% tip or even rounding up to the nearest dollar is appreciated.

Food delivery follows a different calculation. A flat $3–5 is the floor on any order; for larger orders, 15–20% of the order total is standard. Bad weather, long distances or carrying heavy bags warrant 20–25%. Note that app-based delivery fees are paid to the platform, not the driver — always check whether the tip goes directly to the person at your door.

FAQ

Common questions about tipping

How much should you tip at a restaurant?
In the United States, the standard restaurant tip is 18–20% for good service. On a $50 bill, a 20% tip is $10, making the total $60. For exceptional service — attentive, knowledgeable, seamless — 25% or more is a meaningful gesture.
How do you calculate a 20% tip quickly in your head?
Move the decimal one place left to get 10% of the bill, then double it. On a $45 bill: 10% = $4.50, 20% = $9.00. For 15%, take 10% ($4.50) and add half of that ($2.25) = $6.75. Or just use this calculator for an exact result instantly.
Should I calculate the tip on pre-tax or post-tax?
Etiquette experts recommend tipping on the pre-tax subtotal — you are tipping for the service, not government tax. In practice the difference is small. On a $50 pre-tax bill with 8% tax ($54 post-tax), a 20% tip is $10 vs $10.80. Either is socially acceptable.
What is a fair tip for food delivery?
$3–5 is the floor for any delivery order under $20. For larger orders, 15–20% of the order total is standard. Add more for bad weather, stairs, long distances or long waits. App delivery fees go to the platform — always tip the driver separately.
How do you split a bill and tip equally among friends?
Add the tip to the total bill, then divide by the number of people. A $120 bill with 20% tip = $144 total ÷ 4 people = $36 each. This calculator does it automatically — enter the bill, tip percentage and number of people to see each person's share in the split cards below.
Is tipping expected in Japan or South Korea?
No. In Japan and South Korea, tipping is not expected and can be considered rude or offensive. Excellent service is the standard, built into their hospitality culture. Attempting to tip may cause embarrassment. Simply say thank you sincerely.
What tip percentage is considered rude or too low?
In the US, leaving less than 10% on a sit-down restaurant bill signals serious dissatisfaction. Leaving nothing is considered disrespectful unless service was genuinely offensive. If the food was bad but the service was good, tip the server — they did not cook your meal.
How does the automatic gratuity for large groups work?
Most US restaurants automatically add 18–20% gratuity for parties of 6 or more. Check your bill carefully before adding an additional tip — the service charge should already be included. If you want to tip more, ask the server how to add to it directly.
